The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has a solid track record of supporting residential and small commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, primarily through LIPA's solar rebate programs. Large commercial solar projects, however, have historically not been eligible for these programs, and as a result, the opportunities for larger businesses seeking to go solar on Long Island have been limited. Fortunately, this situation has improved markedly with the introduction of the LIPA Feed-in-Tariff.
Under the LIPA Feed-in-Tariff (also known as the "LIPA Tariff for Electric Service") the owners of large solar photovoltaic systems are guaranteed a fixed payment from LIPA for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity produced by the solar system over a 20 year period. The FIT's contractual revenue stream provides a highly visible source of cash flow for system owners, and works in tandem with the federal solar incentives.
The LIPA FIT represents a highly attractive opportunity for businesses and real estate owners to generate incremental revenue from previously under-utilized roof or land areas, either through direct ownership of the solar PV system or through a simple roof lease arrangement whereby EnterSolar pays you to use your roof. If you own a building with 50,000+ square foot of useable roof area (and a relatively new roof, ideally less than 5 years old) or have 3+ acres of available land, please Contact EnterSolar to learn how you can benefit from the LIPA Feed-in-Tariff.
