Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corporation Completes Solar Installation on Hauppauge Global Headquarters
472 kW Rooftop Solar Installation Will Generate 25% of the Manufacturer’s Power
Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corporation, the world’s leading independent supplier of precision DC high voltage power supplies, along with EnterSolar, a leading New York-based provider of solar solutions to commercial enterprises, and PSEG Long Island today announced the completion of a 472-kilowatt rooftop solar system at their Hauppauge global headquarters. Elected officials, PSEG Long Island executives, Hauppauge Industrial Association delegates and Spellman employees gathered for a ribbon-cutting to commemorate this significant project for Spellman High Voltage and Suffolk County, which was made possible, in part, through funding from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s NY-Sun Initiative.
This new 472 maximum kilowatt solar system, combines with a previously installed 35-kilowatt system to reduce Spellman High Voltage’s dependence on the grid by generating a quarter of the total annual electricity needs of the Hauppauge facility. Going solar provides significant environmental benefits to Spellman, the Town of Smithtown and the greater Suffolk County area communities, by reducing the release of CO2 emissions by approximately 770,000 lbs annually (generating enough to power over 54 typical homes for a year or the equivalent of saving over 44,000 gallons of gas per year).
Based in New York since 1947 and Hauppauge since 1996, Spellman High Voltage has a long history of sustainable operations. Each year the company evaluates and seeks to implement additional sustainable technologies and practices. The solar installation is the capstone of a number of existing initiatives, including electric car charging stations, waste reduction initiatives, weather-dependent lawn irrigation systems, waterless urinals and conversion to LED lighting.
This specific project was supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) under the $1 billion NY-Sun initiative to advance the scale-up of solar generated electricity and move New York State closer to having a sustainable, self-sufficient solar industry. NY-Sun is one of the key elements of the Governor’s Reforming the Energy Vision framework, which includes the goal of 50 percent of the electricity generated in the State coming from renewable resources by 2030.
“Spellman High Voltage’s investment in solar is a model for other companies who are looking to renewable power to lower their energy costs,” said John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA. “It underscores the great advances under Governor Cuomo’s statewide NY-Sun program toward securing cleaner energy supplies while creating clean energy jobs for our economy.”
EnterSolar worked with Spellman High Voltage from end to end on the project, including financing structures, engineering, installation and project management.
“This is a key step forward in our ongoing efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. We also expect a further 10% reduction by switching to LED lighting. No reasonable doubt remains about the reality of climate change and the urgent need to reduce emission of greenhouse gases,” said Loren Skeist, Spellman President and CEO. “The Hauppauge facility not only functions as our global headquarters but it is also our largest center for advanced product development and a key advanced manufacturing facility. Our mission is to provide innovative, high voltage power conversion solutions that benefit the global community by enhancing medical, environmental, scientific, industrial and telecommunication applications.”
“Few businesses understand the draw of power that today’s advanced technologies require more than Spellman High Voltage” said Paul Ahern, president, EnterSolar. “Recognizing that a significant amount of the research and development of today’s most advanced medical technologies, among others, could be powered by sustainable energy, Spellman is a model corporate citizen for the ecosystem of electronic power.”
“PSEG Long Island is committed to working with local businesses to help them become more energy efficient and reduce their overall energy costs,” said Mike Voltz, director of energy efficiency and renewables, PSEG Long Island. “Spellman High Voltage’s continued focus on energy efficiency, renewables and sustainability helps create a cleaner and greener Long Island for everyone.”

About Reforming the Energy Vision
Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) is New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers. REV is transforming New York's energy policy with new statewide initiatives and regulatory reforms. REV will grow the state's clean energy economy, support innovation, ensure grid resilience, mobilize private capital, create new jobs, and increase choice and affordability for energy consumers. REV places clean, locally produced power at the very core of New York's energy system. This protects the environment and supports the State's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% while generating 50% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030. Successful initiatives already launched as part of REV include NY-Sun, NY Green Bank, NY Prize, K-Solar, and a commitment to improve energy affordability for low-income communities.
