Big Y Foods, Inc. Goes Solar
Big Y Foods, Inc., a family owned and family oriented retail food company, was founded in 1936 and is committed to providing world class service and value for home food needs. Consistent with Big Y’s commitment to its community, the company partnered with EnterSolar to install a 655 kilowatt (kW) ground mount solar photovoltaic system directly behind their store on just under three-acres of land.
Solar Photovoltaic System Specifications
The Big Y solar photovoltaic system has a total capacity of 655 kW DC, comprising of 2,150 individual 305 watt modules, 18 3-phase string inverters, and an inverter-level data monitoring system with an integrated commercial weather station. The system is projected to produce about 863,210 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is roughly 40 percent of Big Y’s electrical requirements.
Significant Environmental and Financial Returns
The installation’s environmental benefit is equivalent to powering 100 homes, or removing nearly 120 cars from the road per year. EnterSolar’s partnership aligns with Big Y’s commitment to sustainability, including an extensive Big Y Green Initiative program. This project takes advantage of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EnterSolar, which allows Big Y to procure onsite clean electricity at rates significantly below the prevailing “brown” power retail electricity rates. The project also utilizes the Connecticut Zero Emissions Renewable Energy Credit (ZREC) program, offered by Connecticut Light and Power.
