Rothco Goes Solar
Founded in 1953, Rothco is a leading wholesale distributor of military clothing, survival gear and outdoor products to over 10,000 dealers globally. They serve a wide range of markets, including government suppliers, public safety and outdoor/camping among others. With products for men, women and children, Rothco also offers retail merchandise online. They partnered with EnterSolar to install a 1,770 kW rooftop solar system at their headquarters on Long Island.
Solar Photovoltaic System Specifications
The first phase of the project was completed in November 2017 as a “net-metered” system and offsets nearly 85% of the facility’s electricity consumption. The second phase is expected to be complete in the summer of
2018 as a “feed-in tariff” system that will allow Rothco to sell electricity back to PSEG Long Island for a fixed rate per kWh. Once both phases are complete, the project will consist of 5,014 individual modules on the roof of their facility.
The system is expected to produce 2,150,000 kWh of electricity annually and will reduce Rothco’s carbon footprint by more than 2,900,500 pounds of CO2 a year. The system’s environmental benefits are equivalent to powering 302 homes for a year or saving 148,274 gallons of gas annually.
Significant Financial Returns
The first phase of the project utilized the NYSERDA Small Commercial Solar Rebate, which incentivizes solar projects that help meet the on-site electricity load and decease the demand on the grid. The project also benefited from a PSEG Long Island Feed-In Tariff Incentive.
EnterSolar’s expertise in optimizing system design, combined with the available Federal and New York State Solar Incentives, yielded Rothco a rapid payback period and an attractive long-term internal rate of return.
