Stewart’s Shops Goes Solar

Stewart’s Shops is an employee and family-owned convenience store chain based in Saratoga Springs, New York. Stewarts partnered with EnterSolar to install a groundmounted solar photovoltaic system, its second installation with EnterSolar, in Halfmoon, NY. This offsite solar system allows Stewart’s Shops store locations, which are not always suitable for an onsite solar installation, to benefit from a system installed on an alternative site with excellent solar characteristics.

Solar Photovoltaic System Specifications

The Halfmoon-Stewart’s Solar Park system has a total capacity of 1,852.50 kW DC, comprised of 5,700 individual panels, 3-phase string inverters, and an inverter-level data monitoring system with an integrated commercial weather station. The system is projected to produce about 2,402,119 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The environmental benefit of the system is equivalent to powering 16 Stewart’s Shops or planting 360 acres of trees. Stewart’s use of solar power will also result in the avoidance of about 3,087,763 pounds of CO2 per year.

Incentive Provided by the NY-SUN Competitive PV Program

Stewart’s Shops entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which allows Stewarts to procure onsite clean electricity at rates significantly below the prevailing power retail electricity rates. This project is particularly innovative due to its utilization of Remote Net Metering (RNM), whereby the monetary value of the system’s production is allocated to around 16 individual Stewart’s stores in upstate New York. The Stewart’s Shops system was made possible by NYSERDA’s NY-Sun program, which advances Governor Cuomo’s sustainability initiatives.
